Alcohol start being banned in the early 20th century and during Prohibition, the manufacture, transportation, import, export, and sale of alcoholic beverages were restricted or illegal.  Although the sale of alcohol was banned, it was still available in various places when people start to do their own alcohol at home. Prohibition was a very controversial act but supported by many different groups. Progressive people felt that the ban would improve society, but eventually the government realized that Prohibition was an unrealistic goal and they repealed the anti-liquor legislation.

Prohibition was supposed to lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses, and improve health and hygiene. Understanding the societal changes that have occurred since then are also important for making the calculated decisions about whether the after-effects of Prohibition should finally come to an end. But the question remains; was the Prohibition an overall good decision or not?
